Yoh Asakura
He's a laid-back kind of guy who comes from a family of shamans. Yoh can talk to spirits that normal people can see. At times, Yoh can channel them (they possess his body temporarily, but still have control) and take on their skills and powers. He moved to Tokyo for advanced training, but finds out that the 'Shaman Fight' is coming from his psycho fiancee Anna.
Manta Oyamada (Marty)
He's a panicky wimp who freaks out easily. Manta is one of those kids who have to run home from school to watch his favorite TV program. Like Yoh, Manta can also see ghosts, but can't channel them. He's scared of Anna because smacks him around quite a bit to make him do what she wants. But then again, who wouldn't be . . .
Amidamaru
He was a legendary samurai known as 'the fiend' who died about 600 years ago. Amidamaru's spirit roamed Funbari Hill until Yoh and he teamed up. As Yoh's ghost companion, Amidamaru is like his Yojimbô. They work together to defeat other shamans. Like Manta, he is frightened but Anna, who he called the 'she-devil'.
Anna Kyôyama
She's Amidamaru's 'she-devil'. Anna, a serious, controlling, feisty, violent, and abusive 13 year old girl. The sad thing is that she's Yoh's fiancee. Like Yoh, she is also a shaman trained by his grandmother. Anna came to Tokyo after Yoh was almost killed by Ren, a Chinese shaman (and integrating with Amidamaru). She took it upon herself to force Yoh to train and help him reach 100% integration (fusing with a spirit), because she is determined to make him the Shaman King.
Ren
He's a stuck up, rich shaman who is from China. Ren uses his ghost companion, Bason the Chinese warlord who fights with a halberd, as a tool. When Ren found out how strong Amidamaru was, he decided that he must have his power. Ren fought with Yoh and lost, but the 100% integration better Amidamaru and him, put him in the hospital. His sister saw how strong his desire to have the samurai was, so she helped him with her ghost companion, Li Bailing, the Kung Fu master.
Ryu (Rio)
He's the leader of the freaks who are searching for their 'happy place'. Ryu constantly finds the wrong place to crash, and always gets his hair cut off (his groupies call it his ultra pompadour). He was the one who disturbed Amidamaru's grave, who got his revenge with the help of Yoh.
