Hitomi Kanzaki
Hitomi is a 15 year old, first year high school student. She lives with her father, mother, and younger brother. Hitomi likes to tell fortunes using tarot cards, and she is on the school track team. When she comes to Gaea, she begins to have visions of the future, that are very accurate. Hitomi has a pendant, that was given to her by grandmother. The pendant has some kind of connection to the stone in the breastplate of Escaflowne. She has a crush on Allen, who looks just like the boy that she likes at her school, and she cares about Van. Hitomi is a very spirited, bright and capable girl. She expects the unexpected, though at times, it gets to her.
Van Fanel
Van is the 15 year old king of Fanelia. He is the youngest son of the former king, Gaou, and his wife Varie, a member of the Ryujinbito people (Dragon-God people). Both of them died when Van was about 5 years old. He has one older brother, Folken. Van is able to sprout wings because of his half Ryujinbito. He is the pilot of the Gaimelf, Escaflowne. Van's unexpected trip to Earth is the reason Hitomi ends up on Gaea. He is determined to avenge what is done to his kingdom and he can be a bit reckless in how he goes about it, but Van will defend those he cares about at any cost.
Allen Schezar
Allen is a 21 year old knight of the Astoria Kingdom. He is the pilot of Gaimelf, Scherazade. Allen's father left his family when Allen was a boy. His younger sister, Serena, disappeared when he was about 11 years old. Allen's mother died soon after Serena's disappearance. Although he has a reputation of being a jerk, but he actually is a gentleman. Allen is a very honorable man to his kingdom, but that doesn't stop his doing what he thinks is right.
Millerna Aston
Millerna is 15 years old and is the youngest daughter of King Aston's three daughters. She is high-spirited, independent, and quite skilled in medicine. Astoria of an ally of the Zaibach Empire, but Millerna sees that what they are doing is wrong. She is in love with Allen, but he doesn't seem to appreciate those feelings.
Merle
Merle is a 13 year old cat-girl, who has been Van's devoted companion ever since they where both very young. She is an orphan, and the Fanel family is the only real family she has ever had. Merle loves Van a lot and is very protective of him. She is almost always fighting or arguing with Merle because Hitomi gets so much of Van's attention.
Folken Fanel
Folken is 25 years old, and is the oldest son of Goau and Varie, and brother of Van. He disappeared 10 years ago, when he left to slay a dragon and retrieve its energist in order to become king. Folken reappeared in the Zaibach Forces. He is very calm and logical in his reasoning and planning. Folken is quite cold and distant emotionally, though he is not violent or cruel. Like Van, he can also sprout wings.
Dilandau Albatou
Dilandau is a member of the Zaibach Forces. He leads a large group of young men, who are very loyal to him. Dilandau is the pilot of Gaimelf, Alseides. He is 15 years old, and is has a bad temper and very sarcastic. Dilandau likes destruction, especially when it deals with fire.
Dr. Dornkirk
Dr. Dornkirk is the leader of the Zaibach Empire. He is hooked up to a huge machine that keeps him alive, since he is about 200 years old. Dr. Dornkirk spends most of his time looking through the eye piece of a device that makes events in other places, and even in the future, visible to him.
Balgus
Balgus was Van's guardian and teacher after his parents died. He also taught Allen the art of sword-fighting. Balgus was killed defending Van when Fanelia was attacked by the Zaibach Empire.
Varie Fanel
Varie is the mother of Van and Folken. She died when Van was about 5 years old. Varie is a member of the legendary race know as the Ryujinbito.
Goau Fanel
Goau is Van and Folken's father. He also when Van was about 5 years old. Goau is the former king of Fanelia, and pilot of Escaflowne.
Prince Chid
Chid is the Prince of the Freid Province. He is Millerna's nephew, the son of her oldest sister, Marlene, who died three years ago.
Drydren Fassa
Drydren is the man Millerna's father, King Aston, has arranged for her to marry. He is the son of King Aston's most trusted advisor, Meiden Fassa.
Eries Aston
Eries is 21 years old and is the second oldest daughter of the king of Astoria. She cares a lot about her sister, Millerna. Eries wants to make sure that Millerna doesn't come to regret her feelings for Allen.
Leon Schezar
Leon is Allen's Father. He left his family to follow a dream.
Hitomi's Grandmother
Hitomi's Grandmother gave Hitomi a pendant that seems to have a connection to the world of Gaea.
Naria and Erya
Naria and Erya are members of the Cheetah-people race. They are very loyal to Folken, who saved their lives after when they were being tortured by the people who killed their family.
Susumu Amano
Susumu is a high school senior, and is the captain of the track team. Hitomi has a huge crush on him. Before she left to Gaea, he seemed to feel something for her also. Susumu is leaving Hitomi's school because his father has got a job in England.
Yukari Uchida
Yukari is Hitomi's best friend. She acts as Hitomi's "manager." Yukari tells Hitomi that she must tell Susumu about her feelings for him before he leaves.
